AP* Online Classes

My favorite assignment was constructing a brain website to aid myself and the other students in reviewing this part of the body. This course definitely enhanced my interest in the subject particularly because Mrs. G's love for psychology was so apparent and consequently contagious!

AP European History

On-Line for the 2019-2020 School Year

Teacher: Meredith Noah

Email: meredith@noahnation.org

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This AP course is an in-depth look at "modern" European History starting with a brief look at the end of the Middle Ages and ending with the current time period with a discussion on contemporary issues impacting the continent.  Please look here to see the full course description as outlined by the College Board. My goal is to use interactive tools as well as lessons to help students to not only master the material, but to enjoy it - and to make interdisciplinary connections that will help them in the future.

In addition to assigned readings (from the textbook as well as primary and secondary sources), students will also be trained in the written elements of the AP exam, including the DBQ, the LEQ and the SAQ.  Students will be expected to participate in some collaborative online discussions as well as projects. Additionally, students will have the option to participate in live online reviews with brick & mortar students.

START DATE: Monday August 26, 2019 (there will be a brief summer assignment posted on August 1, 2019)

END DATE: Thursday May 7, 2020 (The test is on Wednesday May 6th, Thursday is just a quick follow-up online discussion)

BREAKS:

NOTE: This course is taught asynchronously, with work due on Fridays each week (unless otherwise arranged with Ms. Noah)

Course format: A detailed syllabus will be posted at the start of each unit with all assignments. Most units will last from 2-3 weeks. A sample syllabus is posted below. Each syllabus includes essential questions and hyperlinked vocabulary lists for each unit as well as links to review test questions. All units include some combination of: primary source work, threaded discussion, Do-Nows, collaborative activities, AP Skills work as well as online lectures and of course, an assessment. Ms. Noah will also be offering occasional optional online review sessions, which will be archived for those who cannot attend live.

Resources: High-speed internet and a reliable computer with an internet browser. No specific software is required, although instructor-student cooperation regarding technical difficulties is expected. The course will be run through the Schoology website, which is free for students. I strongly recommend that students familiarize themselves with the website at the start of the course.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Meredith Noah, a New Jersey native, has been teaching AP European History since 1999. She received her B.A. in History at Ramapo College of New Jersey, where she also became an accredited Social Studies teacher for grades 6-12. Ms. Noah earned her M.A. in Liberal Studies with a concentration in European History from Rutgers University and has 30 additional graduate credits in Educational Technology from Colorado State University.

Ms. Noah is a very involved participant in the AP community. She has been an AP Reader since 2010, scoring thousands of DBQ essays, Long Essay Questions (LEQs) and in June 2019, Short Answer Questions (SAQs). With the experience of being trained by the College Board, Ms. Noah has been able to teach the specific skills needed to write well for the exam, which has resulted in consistently strong scores well above the national average.   Additionally, Ms. Noah is the founder and administrator for the largest secure collaborative community for AP European History teachers online, with over 2,000 active teacher members. She also has led online AP review consortium with other AP Readers for students through Google Hangouts.

In addition to AP European History, Ms. Noah has taught World Civilizations and American History in the same brick & mortar public school district since the 1998-1999 school year.

Outside of work, Ms. Noah enjoys traveling {favorite international destinations include Florence, St. Malo (France), Innsbruck (Austria) and Paris}. Looking ahead, she is leading an upcoming school trip to Scandinavia in July 2019 and is planning a future journey for the summer of 2021. While Ms. Noah is a great lover of history and European studies, she also loves pop culture, reading, writing, swimming, as well as spoiling her dog, Honey.
