Technical Requirements:
Who Should Apply: This class is open to 10th through 12th grade
students who have completed one year of high-school level chemistry and algebra
including use of logarithms. Students must be ready to commit 10 to12 hours a
week for this course, not including lab work.
Course Schedule:

students to purchase used versions of the textbook to keep costs affordable.
Class Description: AP Chemistry is a comprehensive two-semester,
first-year college level chemistry class with a College Board recommended text
and a dedicated instructor who will provide thorough instruction, engaging assignments,
personal tutoring assistance and challenging hands-on lab work. At the end of the course, students are fully
prepared to take the AP Chemistry Exam.
Assignments
are given at the beginning of each week and, although there are due dates,
students can work during the week on their own schedule and at their own pace.
Students are not required to be logged in at a specific time of day. All class
materials, homework, tests/quizzes, video lectures, interactive assignment
program and discussion forum are available 24/7. Given that most students have
hectic school schedules as well as extra-curricular activities, they seem to appreciate
the flexibility of the course.
The course provides custom handouts and outlines for each chapter assigned
in the textbook to assist students in focusing on important topics. Video
lectures and graphics are also used to enhance a student’s knowledge and
reinforce important concepts. Graded by the instructor, essay questions help students
apply their knowledge of chemistry concepts, develop their problem solving
skills and improve their critical thinking abilities.
Students also use a web-based interactive homework assignment and test
program used by over 250 universities, colleges and academies -- including
California-Berkeley, Chapel Hill, Notre Dame, Auburn, Georgetown, Rensselaer
Polytechnic, Rutgers, Texas A&M, the United States Air Force and the United
States Military and Naval Academies.
This customized learning environment provides a rich, unique
learning experience. With this web assignment program, short answer, numeric
and multiple-choice questions are immediately graded to provide instant
feedback. Students know right away if they have done a problem correctly. As in
the phrase “practice makes perfect”, students are allowed multiple submissions enabling
them to learn from their mistakes and arrive at the correct answer. Grades are
available from an online grade book which provides an up-to-date view of progress
for the student and parents. Students interact with one another and the teacher
in a safe, carefully monitored, closed environment.
Lab Description: The College Board requires a
"hands-on laboratory component" for AP Chemistry. To fulfill this requirement, students perform
College Board recommended labs at home under parent supervision. Students
produce a comprehensive lab notebook describing each experiment in detail. The
lab notebook is required by some prospective colleges and further demonstrates
the rigor of the course. The course is coordinated with a lab kit which
includes a centigram electronic balance, digital thermometer, digital multimeter, organic chemistry model kit, volumetric flask,
Erlenmeyer flask, beakers, test tubes, wash bottle, safety goggles, gloves, assorted
lab ware and chemicals. In addition to the lab kit, the course will require use
of small amounts of household chemicals such as baking soda, hydrogen peroxide,
rubbing alcohol and ammonia. The chemicals used in the experiments require care
in handling, but are no more dangerous than many common household substances.
Lab safety, an essential part of any chemistry course, will be emphasized. Each
experiment has been designed to safely perform at home. Parents must assume
responsibility for the safe storage of the chemicals and equipment and provide
adequate supervision.
The AP Chemistry course with hands-on lab brings out the excitement that is
chemistry. When you have completed this course in May, you will have completed
the equivalent of a first-year college level chemistry course and will be
thoroughly prepared to take the AP Chemistry exam.

How to register: Assuming you meet or will have met the prerequisites
of one year of high school chemistry and algebra and will be in 10th, 11th or
12th grade by next fall, simply fill out and submit the online application at www.chemadvantage.com. I will review the application and get back to
you within a few days. If accepted, you may register by paying the course
tuition through the PAHS Online Store.
I hope to see you in AP Chemistry!
