Unpacking Creative Thinking Processes
This course is for any high school student that wishes to get a better understanding of how our minds work to solve problems and develop solutions. Similar to the scientific method, there is a lot of research about how our minds work to solve creative problems. Once students understand the process, they can use it to their advantage to develop ideas faster and move projects forward. This is a great course for students that already took AP art and wish to further develop their ability to be a creative thinker and problem solver. It’s also a great course for students that love art, and want to further understand new ways to solve problems in creative and playful ways.
This course is six weeks. Each week students will learn about the creative process and explore a technique that helps them to strengthen and develop their creative process. Course content will be delivered via pre-recorded videos that students can access at any time and written content.
Materials: There are no required materials for this course. It’s recommended that students have a sketchbook to write down and explore their ideas. A sketchbook can be a traditional sketchbook, or the back of a cereal box, it really doesn’t matter. The course is designed for students to be able to work, explore, and create with whatever they have access to.
Start Date: July 6th, 2020
End Date: August 14th, 2020
- Students will examine a variety of definitions of creativity and develop their own working definition.
- Students will understand and apply the steps of the creative thinking process to their own creative problems and projects.
- Students will examine how the creative thinking process can be used in a wide range of situations and not just art making.
There will be a live session each week on Tuesday, at 5 pm EST. These sessions will also be recorded and shared so that you will still have access to the content if you can’t attend live. Students can also submit questions beforehand, and images of sketchbook pages that they want feedback on during the call, even if they can’t attend live.
Cost of Course: $75 if you select to take the course for no grade, $150 if you select to take the course for a grade. If you take the course for no grade, you will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course. If you take the course for a grade you will receive a transcript with your grade at the end of the course. This course is worth ½ credit.
