Honors Biology is an inquiry-based course focused on providing students with foundational biological sciences content. It is designed for accelerated students who have good problem-solving skills and the ability and tenacity to work independently to internalize concepts. Students will engage in modeling, mathematics and analytical reading and writing skills to facilitate understanding. This course involves lecture-discussion, presentations and both hands-on and virtual laboratory activities. The course topics include cells, genetics, ecology, animal structure and function, and evolution and diversity. A study of plant structure and function will be offered as an alternative to studying evolution and diversity. At the end of the course, students will be prepared for AP Biology or a biology course at a college or university. Dr. Kanner received a BS in Biology from the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from The Ohio State University. Following post-graduate work at Children’s Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., she practiced full-time in Silver Spring Maryland. Dr. Kanner took a sabbatical from dentistry and dedicated the next sixteen years to homeschooling her children. When they reached high school age, the children transitioned to AP-level courses and dual-enrollment college classes and Dr. Kanner launched a career in online science education beginning with the PA Homeschoolers AP Biology course in 2010. In addition to teaching online courses, Dr. Kanner also maintains an active adjunct professor status in the greater Boston, Massachusetts area at colleges including Northeastern University, Regis College, Stonehill College and Massasoit Community College. Her course offerings include Biology, Biology for Engineers, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Adv. Pathophysiology for Nurse practitioners. She is particularly passionate about helping students to understand and appreciate the interrelationships between basic scientific principles, biological processes, and applications in the clinical healthcare environment.
