AP Spanish Language & Culture Reviews

¡Muchas gracias!

  • Did you feel this class prepared you for the AP exam?

Definitely! I actually took my exam this morning, and it was wonderful. I felt comfortable with every section, because our class was structured around the exam components, which made us feel much more prepared. I actually was able to just have fun on this exam!

  • How many hours of work per day or per week did you generally put into this class?

Really not too much. It is one of the lightest AP classes I have taken, but Mrs. Weber prepares us so well. The most time consuming part was doing the AP Classroom progress checks at certain points in each unit, but I found those to honestly prepare me for the actual exam components the most. If you are already taking many other APs and are hoping to add this one in, I think it could work. I would at most spend an hour a day, give or take. A generally low stress course for those that already have a very strong handle on their Spanish skills!

  • Did this class enhance your interest in the subject?

I already loved Spanish so much and am a lover of languages, so if it's possible to make me even more interested in this subject, then I would say so! It made me motivated to put the efforts in to (hopefully) get a five on the exam.

  • Did you find your communications with other students to be interesting or valuable?

The main peer to peer communication occurs in our weekly live classes. Even though we did not talk outside of those sessions, we still felt like a group. It was very enjoyable to converse with my peers in Spanish! There are definitely really talented Spanish speakers that inspired me.

  • What sort of student would do well in this class? Would you recommend this class to other students (if they are willing to work hard!)?

This course does accommodate for a generally varied level of Spanish I'd say, so if you feel confident in your skills and are willing to put it to practice in conversation in class, then take it! I loved the class so much, and Mrs. Weber is fantastic. She is a very relaxed, personable teacher, and her class atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming. ¡Recomiendo que tomes este curso excelente!

Very focused toward the AP exam

Did you feel the course prepared you for the AP exam?

Yes, very well. I got a 5 on the AP test, and I think this was mostly due to the unit tests being in the AP test format. I felt confident with the exam structure on test day.

How many hours of work per day or per week did you generally put into the course?

Actually, not many. While we did have to write Spanish essays frequently, this was one of my lightest AP course loads throughout high school.

Are there any particularly favorite assignments that you found especially valuable?

I really appreciated the personalized review assignments at the end of the year. Señora Weber gave us each a mini-zoom session at the end of the year, and asked us which areas we felt uncomfortable in. Then, she tailored the homework assignments from there on out to our weak areas, which really lightened the load of homework and ensured that we got as many assignments as was most beneficial for each of us.

Did you find your communications with other students to be interesting or valuable?

While there wasn't a lot of peer communication, Señora Weber was always available through email or zoom and was very willing to help address any questions promptly.

What sort of student would do well in this course? Would you recommend this course to other students (if they are willing to work hard!)?

I definitely recommend this course to other students that are willing to put a bit of effort in. It was very focused on the test, and, if a student already had a pretty good handle on their Spanish, it would be a nice addition to an already somewhat busy course load (this was one of my six AP tests that year).

        Una Clase Maravillosa

Did you feel the course prepared you for the AP exam?

Yes, I believe that the course prepared me well for the AP exam. The homework assignments we did each week were excellent training for the AP style questions. Also, the regular AP Classroom work was very helpful.

How many hours of work per day or per week did you generally put into the course?

On average I probably spent around 7-8 hours per week on the course. This included the live meeting time, doing homework, and reading assigned passages.

Are there any particularly favorite assignments that you found especially valuable?

The research assignments that sometimes accompanied our homework online was very valuable. To gather the information to write an essay on some cultural aspect, we had to research the information. And in doing so, we gained important information and insights, especially for the cultural comparison tasks.

Did the course enhance your interest in the subject?

I had taken 4 years of Spanish prior to taking AP Spanish, and I already enjoyed studying Spanish. However, AP Spanish introduced me to the various forms of communication, which I found interesting. They included email writing, formal argumentative writing, interpersonal speaking, and presentational speaking. After taking the course, I felt much more comfortable in those forms of communication in Spanish.

Did you find your communication with other students to be interesting or valuable?

The students did not really communicate with each other outside of the live sessions. But during the live sessions, we frequently discussed a certain cultural topic, and listening to other students' viewpoints was always fascinating.

What sort of student would do well in this course? Would you recommend this course to other students (if they are willing to work hard!)?

Any student with a strong background in Spanish who is willing to spend the time to learn about Spanish-speaking cultures, while reinforcing their knowledge of vocab and grammar, would likely excel in the course. I would recommend this AP Spanish course to any student with a passion for the Spanish language, literature, and culture.
