AP World History Reviews

AP World History Review

Posted by Brady Dupuis on 05/03/2024

This class was so informational, and the assignments really helped me get a glimpse into the lesser-known parts of history. Mrs. Newman was a great teacher and was astoundingly fast at responding to questions either on Canvas or over email. This is a challenging class, though that is expected at the AP level, but between Mrs. Newman’s help and the countless resources she gave us, it was very manageable. I had a wonderful school year, and this class was a great part of it!

    I recommend this class

Mrs. Newman was incredibly responsive. The night before the AP exam I had a question, and she responded just a few hours later, helping me prepare even more for the test. Her assignments were based on what would be on the test which really helped prepare me. When I began the test, none of the questions seemed surprising, which really shows how much she prepared us. The feedback on our writing assignments was structured around the actual AP rubric which helped me to write the way I needed to on the test. I spent a few hours each week on this class, and those hours were a great investment of my time. I'd recommend this class for anyone who wants a good score on the AP exam.

      Thank You

Mrs. Newman's dedication to her students is truly admirable. Her ability to create a warm classroom environment nurtures a sense of community among her students, leading to a more engaged lesson.

In addition to her exceptional teaching skills, Mrs. Newman has a talent for establishing critical thinking in her students. She encourages them to ask questions and think deeply about connections around the world. It's clear that she genuinely cares about helping her students achieve their full potential.

I absolutely recommend this to any student wanting to take AP World History

I absolutely loved this course! I wouldn't consider history my strong suite or my favorite subject, but I still learned so much in this class! Mrs. Newman is a wonderful teacher, and I would absolutely recommend this class to anyone willing to put in the work, as it is a lot of self study with super helpful zoom calls each week.

Overall, this was a great course and it really broadened my worldview! I typically put about 6 hours into this subject on a weekly basis. The assignment which I particularly enjoyed was the trade route assignment "behold the great camel". This course really boosted my curiosity for history! My communications with other students were very minimal but this didn't bother me. I would definitely recommend this course for other students- it was fun and a breath of fresh air- i think that any student who has a passion for learning would do well in this course! Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher Mrs. Newman!

AP World History with Mrs. Newman!

This is a great course, and I learned a lot about world history! Mrs. Newman was very willing to answer any questions and grade any writing. She also put in the time to do a Zoom review almost every week, and though I didn't attend every time, I enjoyed watching all the recordings. I thought the class was well organized, as Mrs. Newman posted regular updates that kept me up on the assignments or what was going on. A lot of resources were also provided, but of course, how much you study and what you study are entirely up to you. Mrs. Newman didn't specifically require me to study something, so you are accountable for yourself. The homework wasn't overwhelming (for which I was grateful XD), but I had to do much more writing practice on my own to feel prepared for the exam. So, someone taking this course definitely has to be hardworking and motivated, especially if you are not familiar with the writing skills required for the exam and because there is a lot of content to study.

One thing I would suggest for this class is to be able to read the other classmates' writing. I think this would have helped me to know what was rewarded and what was not, and to understand faster how to correctly respond to the different prompts. I think it would also have helped me to become more familiar with the writing tasks through evaluating the responses of my classmates, and to be able to emulate what was done correctly and know what mistakes to avoid. Overall, that was the only thing that I missed in this class! I enjoyed my time here. :)

The World, Its History, and Me

This class is undoubtedly a fine class.  I learned a lot, the assignments were engaging and useful, and I didn't feel like there was a lot of busywork.  In an year where I took 4 AP classes, this one was thankfully not a source of stress.  Nevertheless, near the end, I found myself struggling slightly with test prep.  There on average 3 assignments per unit and roughly 1 unit a month... thankfully I had taken AP US History previously so my essay/analytical history skills only needed a little brushing up, but still I felt my content review was lacking at times.

One way this course could be improved is to possibly increase the number of assignments.  While the lectures were not lacking, I sometimes felt like the assignments were "do and forget" - I would do one of the assignments, and then promptly forget most of the content and have to review more near the end of class.  Perhaps assigning more multiple choice questions or more targeted reviews (such as asking the students to compose "rapid review" sheets with important course content inside) would have improved my review, along with more practice essays.

Nevertheless, Ms. Newman was responsive in my requests for review content - she readily graded my essays, and also provided the practice tests I requested.  For a highly motivated student with a lot of drive to self-study and actively seek out help, this class would be a great choice.

Parent review - a very approchable teacher

I found Mrs. Newman very approachable. She was very open to suggestions by both parents and the students. She added not only regular Zoom sessions but also adopted a few of Mrs. Richman's APUSH activities and assignments, such as History in the News and movie nights.

Compared to other PAH classes, the workload is on the lower end, but there are many optional resources to explore if desired. And while the class isn't as interactive as some of the other PAH social science classes, I believe my son was well prepared for the AP exam. He found Mrs. Newman's willingness to comment on revisions of his essays to be especially beneficial.

I liked this class. Mrs. Newman is a great teacher, my classmates were fun, and the assignments were interesting. I definitely felt prepared for the AP exam. I put around an hour to an hour and half of work in every day, though at the beginning of the year, most of that hour was spent slogging through the textbook. In my opinion, you could just abandon the textbook completely and read the AMSCO book instead. It would save a lot of time while still covering the same important stuff.

I would recommend this class to students who are willing to put in the effort and can work well independently. Mrs. Newman is super responsive if you reach out to her, but a lot of the work (like doing the reading assignments, watching videos, reviewing, figuring stuff out) is something you have to hold yourself accountable for.

AP World History by Mrs. Newman

To provide some background information before the review, I took this class as a freshman, and it was my introduction into the world of AP classes and tests, so I went into it not knowing much and also don't have anything to compare it to. Also, the format of the test changed drastically over halfway through the school year because of COVID-19, so I didn't have the typical AP test experience. With that being said, I scored a 5 on the test.

Mrs. Newman was a great teacher because she was always available to email privately for help and was always willing to spend extra time so that I could understand things better. For example, when the new test format was announced, I did a bunch of practice DBQs outside of classwork, and she scored them for me, always within a day or two. I struggled a lot with analyzing documents, and she gave me different examples of what would earn a point and what wouldn't. I think her feedback was what really helped me the most on the test.

One thing I disliked about the class was that the amount of time it took to complete the homework varied greatly from week to week. Some weeks, I would spend hours on the homework, and other times, I wouldn't have any work for an extended period of time. This inconsistency made it difficult to plan and allot time for the class. However, I appreciated the amount of resources (videos, websites, articles, worksheets, etc.) Mrs. Newman provided because it gave me an easy way to review topics.
