Op-eds, or opinion pieces (also sometimes called editorials), are some of the most influential (not to mention interesting!) pieces of journalism… and many of the best op-eds have been penned by young adults and teenagers. Each of you has a unique take on the world, an original perspective, and something vital to say about life, love, politics, or something else entirely. Often it is the voices of younger generations that offer insight to the rest of the world.

In this course, you will learn how to write an op-ed as well as how to submit it for publication. We will explore every part of the process — from journalistic standards (Associated Press style!) and the mechanics of prose, to creative ideation, drafting, polishing/revision, submission to editors, and more. If you desire to publish your piece, I will help you find outlets and reach out to editorial contacts.

Whether or not you already have an idea of what you want to write about, don’t worry. You will be allowed to write about whatever you wish, but I will also offer brainstorming opportunities, topic ideas/prompts, and feedback regarding how to narrow your selected topic into what will become a succinct and compelling op-ed.

We will read some of the best op-eds throughout time, including modern pieces. I will offer oneon- one instruction and revision feedback, so that by the end of our course, you will have a readyto- go piece.

If you desire to pursue journalism in college or beyond, this will be a fantastic experience. Colleges love to see published pieces as writing samples, and school newspapers value extant journalism experience on your resumé.
